This week, in 1938, Superman made his debut on the cover of Action Comics #1. Since then, he’s been featured in countless comic stories, TV shows, and movies. He’s been made into action figures, featured on lunch boxes and backpacks, clothing, jewelry, dishware, bed sheets, car rugs, salt & pepper shakers. You name it, Superman’s on it. Why do you suppose that is? Because everybody loves a superhero!
We love superheroes because:
They fight against evil
They save people from calamity
They’re the hope for the people
Remember my blog about Gideon? He was weak and scared yet chosen by God to deliver Israel out of Midianite bondage. For seven long years they were severely oppressed when, finally, they cried out to God and God sent them a deliverer – Gideon.
In Judges 6-8, we read how God took Gideon, made him the leader of his army, and then set him up in such a way that all the odds appeared to be against Gideon. At the Lord’s command, Gideon’s army, originally 32,000 men, dwindled down to only 300 men. These mere 300 men were going against the enemy army of 135,000 men. What would our natural speculation be? Odds were the 135,000-man army was sure to win. But that wasn’t God’s plan. God came swooping in, in true superhero fashion, annihilated the Midianites and gave the victory to Gideon’s 300 men. God’s way doesn’t always make sense to us. But in the end, He always gets the glory. Superman is pretty awesome! But the true superhero of our story is Jesus. The Savior of the world who swooped down and saved His people from sin and death.
Prayer: Sovereign Lord, You make no mistake in choosing us to go against the forces of evil in the world. Yet You are the only one that can truly save. Equip us with Your spirit and Your power in order to do fearsome work for Your kingdom. In the precious name of Your son, Amen.
Action: Jesus is your superhero! Identify an area in your life where you need saving. Maybe it’s saving from a sinful habit, saving in a relationship, saving in an attitude toward something or someone. Cry out to the Lord for help. When He moves and asks you to do something, trust Him, even if it doesn’t make sense. You won’t see the Lord’s hand in it if it doesn’t seem impossible to begin with.
