“Would you like to get well?” John 5:6
That’s a loaded question if I do say so myself. Who doesn’t want to get well? Who doesn’t want to be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally healthy? Who doesn’t want pain, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, or guilt eradicated from their lives? Jesus’ question to the lame man doesn’t just speak to his physical wellness, but also to his spiritual wellness. A question He asks each one of us.
I think one of the greatest tragedies of this age is to think that God has nothing to do with healing. To look to the ways of the world and the latest notions for deliverance from every type of ailment. I feel for this group of people in John 5 who waited years for healing, putting their hope in a pool of water that occasionally stirred up a “blessing of healing”. This man, in particular, waited 38 years to be healed. Often longing for the blessing of healing, but always being left behind while others pounced ahead of him, getting to the water before he could get there on this own. Yet when Jesus came onto the scene, He offered healing through nothing but His words. Healing did not come by His touch, as it did in other stories of His healings. But by His words alone. What an interesting parallel that even to this day, healing is still offered through His Word. If only we’d have the faith to believe it.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are the Great Healer for our souls, spirits, bodies, minds, and hearts. As You demonstrated to that man by the pool, You and You alone are able to heal. Speak Your words of life to us and make us well. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
Action: God’s words have the power to heal emotionally, spiritually, physically, mentally, and relationally. Devote some time each day this week to reading the Bible. Nothing in all of creation has the power like He does.
